Have you ever been told your labs are normal, but you still feel exhausted, foggy, inflamed, bloated, or just not like yourself? In this episode, Dr. Raquel explains why normal does not always mean optimal and why your symptoms still matter.
So many people have had the frustrating experience of being told that everything looks normal, even when they know they do not feel normal.
In this episode of The Rockyn YES Podcast: Your Empowered Self, Dr. Raquel talks about the gap between standard lab ranges and optimal function, why symptoms are still important data, and why deeper testing can help people stop guessing and start getting answers.
If you have ever felt dismissed, brushed off, or confused by “normal” results that do not match how you actually feel, this episode is for you.
In this episode, we cover:
- why normal does not always mean optimal
- why symptoms matter even without a diagnosis
- how the body often whispers before it screams
- why standard labs do not always tell the whole story
- why testing is better than guessing
- the difference between surviving and functioning well
Key takeaway
Your symptoms are still data, and just because something is normal on paper does not mean your body is functioning at its best.

Welcome to the Rockin' Yes podcast, your empowered self. This is the place where we talk about healing from the inside out. We talk about the connections between your health, your mind, your nervous system, your patterns, and the deeper root causes that may be keeping you stuck. Because healing is not just about chasing symptoms. It is about learning to understand your body, support it, and step back into the life you were meant to live. So if you have ever been told that everything looks normal, but deep down you know you do not feel normal, this episode is for you. Let's get into it. Today you want to talk about something that so many women have experienced, and men, and honestly, it is just one of the most frustrating parts of trying to get answers. You go in because you are tired, you are foggy, you are not sleeping well, your digestion is off, your mood feels different, your body feels inflamed, your hormones feel off, and you know something's not right. And then you get told, hey, everything looks normal. And maybe part of you wants to feel relieved. But another part of you knows that answer, that answer specifically does not match how you actually feel inside. That disconnect can be incredibly frustrating because when someone tells you everything is normal, but you still feel tired, bloated, anxious, inflamed, overwhelmed, foggy, and just unlike yourself, it can make you start doubting your own experience. You start wondering maybe I am overreacting. Maybe it is stress. Maybe I just need to push harder. Maybe this is just aging. Maybe I'm expecting too much. Normal does not always mean optimal. And normal does not always mean well. This is just an important distinction because many people are being told they are fine simply because their labs do not show a major disease process. But there is a big difference between not being in crisis and actually functioning well. There's a big difference between being inside a standard lab range and truly feeling like your body is working the way it was designed to work. That is what I want people to understand. Sometimes a lab being called normal only mean one thing. You do not yet meet the criteria for a diagnosis. Does not always mean your body is thriving, your nervous system is regulated, your digestion is strong, your hormones are balanced, your nutrient status is solid, your inflammation is low, or your energy systems are working well. Those are very different conversations. And this is why so many people stay stuck for so long. They know something is off. Their symptoms are real, but because they are told they are normal, they stop looking deeper. Or they start blaming themselves. And that is where I think so much harm happens. Because just because something does not look extreme on paper does not mean there is not a pattern developing. It does not mean the body is not under stress, it does not mean the body is not under stress, it does not mean there is no healing opportunity. Sometimes the body whispers long before it screams. And I think that matters so much. Because by the time many things become obvious enough to flag as major problems, the body has often been compensating for a long time. That compensation can look like fatigue, brain fog, bloating, poor sleep, constipation, cycle changes, mood shifts, anxiety, weight resistance, hair changes, slower recovery, and feeling wired and tired. Those things matter. They may not always get treated like big red flags in a quick appointment, but they matter. They are part of the story, and they are often clues. This is one reason I talk so much about patterns. Because healing is not only about whether one number is wildly out of range, it is also about asking how is this person actually functioning? What are the symptoms saying?
SPEAKER_00What systems may be struggling, and where is the body compensating? What is this body asking for?
SPEAKER_01That's a little bit of a different viewpoint, and I think it is much more helpful one. Now, I also want to be clear, I'm not saying standard labs are useless. They absolutely have value. They can catch important things, they can rule certain things in or out, they can give us information, but do they but they do not always mean the whole story? And that's the point. And some people need a deeper look. Sometimes they need to look beyond, is it bad enough yet? And start asking, what is happening underneath this? That is where functional testing and whole body perspective can be so helpful. Because we are not just asking whether something is severely broken. We are asking whether the body is functioning optimally. And if someone who is exhausted, inflamed, bloated, not sleeping, moody, or foggy, that distinction matters a lot. Now let's talk about why this happens. Lab ranges are often based on broad population averages. That means a range can include a lot of people who are not actually feeling amazing. So just because you fall somewhere inside that range does not mean that it is automatically correct.
SPEAKER_00It does not mean you're actually functioning at your best.
SPEAKER_01It is not the optimal levels. It may simply mean you are not far enough outside the range to trigger concern in that model. That is different than asking: is this person thriving? Is this person resilient? Is this person sleeping deeply? Digesting well, thinking clearly, recovering well, feeling steady in their mood and energy. That is why normal can feel so confusing. Because for many people, normal on paper does not match normal in real life. And if you have experienced that, you are not crazy. You are not making it up, you are not being dramatic, you may just be living in the gap between standard and optimal. And that gap is real. And that is where a lot of women and men are living. This is also why symptom tracking matters. Because if someone is freezing all the time, losing hair, constipated, exhausted, puffy, anxious, not sleeping, and relying on caffeine to just a function, that matters. Even if they've been told everything is technically normal. Even if nobody has given them a clear label, the body is still speaking, and symptoms are still data. I really want people to hear that. Symptoms are still data. Not something to obsess over, not something to fear, but something to listen to. Because symptoms often show up before a diagnosis does. And if we wait until things are undeniable, we often miss a lot of chances to support the body earlier. That is one of the reasons I care so much about testing. Testing is not about creating fear. It is not about hunting for problems just to find them. It is about clarity. It is about understanding patterns. It is about giving context to the symptoms someone is already living with. It is about asking better questions. It is about moving from confusion into direction. That is why I say testing is better than guessing. Because when someone is tired, foggy, inflamed, stressed, and struggling, they often start guessing. Maybe I need this supplement. Maybe I need that diet. Maybe I need to cut more foods. Maybe I need to work out harder. Maybe I need to push through. But if the actual issue is something deeper, guessing can keep people spinning for a very long time. And that is exhausting. And it can get expensive too. What I want people to know is that real healing often starts when you stop making yourself the problem. Not what is wrong with me. But what has my body been trying to tell me? What has been missed?
SPEAKER_00What pattern is developing? What support do I need?
SPEAKER_01That is such a more compassionate and useful question. And that is also why I do not think we should dismiss someone just because they are not bad enough yet. You do not have to wait until you are falling apart to start paying attention. You do not have to wait until things become extreme to start supporting your body. You do not have to wait for a diagnosis to know that something is off. That matters. Especially for women who have been brushed off, minimized, or told they are just stressed. Because yes, stress matters. But it is not the only thing that matters. We also need to ask, how is the gut functioning? What does inflammation look like? Are there nutrient issues? What is happening with hormones? What is happening with blood sugar? What is happening with detox capacity? What is the whole body picture? That is a deeper conversation. And that is the one I want more people to know exists. Because when someone finally feels seen and their symptoms finally start to make sense, it can be such a relief. Not because they wanted something to be wrong, but because they know that they have a path that they are on now. Now they have the context. Now they have the direction. And that changes everything. If you have been told your labs are normal, but you do not feel normal, I want you to hear this. Do not ignore your body. Do not gaslight yourself. Do not assume you are lazy, dramatic, weak, or just getting older. Keep listening, keep paying attention, because your symptoms matter. Your experience matters. And there may be more to the story. And that is why deeper testing, looking at patterns, supporting the whole body, can make such a difference. Along with looking at your traditional blood work, I look at the optimal levels from a functional standpoint, not your normal lab values. So bringing your work in so I can look at it differently makes a huge difference. You want to look at the optimal levels. Because the traditional standard levels, again, like I said, they're for a wide range of people who may not have been feeling well. But the functional side has determined an optimal level, what optimal health truly should be in, so that people can feel optimally good. It's a way more narrow range. And it may be made very different than what the traditional system is. So thank you for being here with me today on the Rockin' Yes podcast, Your Empowered Cell. If this episode speaks to you, share it with someone you need this reminder to. And if you're tired of being told everything is normal when you know your body is asking for deeper support, this is exactly why getting clearer answers can be so powerful.
